Hi, guys —"The Virgin Adoring the Host" by The Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres

I love the painting "The Virgin Adoring the Host"
by The Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. It is excellent! I love it for it contains the two main element of our Faith: the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Eucharist.

I know it's not a Holy Icon or religious art in the strict sense. But I wonder,

  • Can I venerate it since simply looking at it makes me think and love Our Lady and the Eucharist?

Besides, this painting is the wallpaper of my mobile phone. But I wonder.

  • Is setting wallpaper of a painting of Our Lady an appropriate act since the mobile phone is not a religious item and made for worldly things?

Besides I admit I sometimes visit porn things on the Internet, after that I always feel shamed because I think these porn things pollute the wallpaper of Our Mother Mary.

  • What do you think?
  • Should I change my phone wallpaper?

Joseph

  { Because of my  porn habits, should I keep this Eucharistic-Marian wallpaper on my mobile phone? }

Eric replied:

Joseph,

In my opinion, the wallpaper is an excellent reminder for you to be chaste. When Jesus touched the leper, it did not make him unclean; it made the leper clean. Our Lady cannot be defiled, but rather she purifies. While you shouldn't get the idea that this image of her will make the porn OK (You should be making the effort, with every fiber of your being, to reject, renounce, and repudiate porn.), it might, through various means, help you to combat porn. Remember that watching porn (and accompanying activities) is a grave sin that, if you do it freely and intentionally, deprives you of God's grace and merits Hell. Porn is destructive on many levels; read

Porn literally re-wires the brain, and supporting it supports the exploitation and trafficking of women, many if not most of whom are forced into the sex acts portrayed in the porn.

I recommend you look into:

  • STRIVE— Join Matt Fradd and a community of brothers in discovering the keys to living porn-free with the STRIVE: 21-Day Porn Detox, and
  • have frequent recourse to Confession, so that you can receive the Eucharist after your falls into porn.

In general, anything that helps you invoke the Blessed Virgin Mary would be beneficial. And yes, there is no reason you can't venerate the image.

Eric
